Career changer living the Dream

Career changer living the Dream

7 years ago this very day I walked out the door of my corporate life to follow my dream of becoming a commercial photographer. This week alone I have photographed 2 advertising campaigns for 2 national food brands (one of which ironically’ will be launching with my photography in the very international retailer I left 7years ago) along with photographing a celebrity feature for a national magazine.

I’m not saying it has been easy, quite the opposite its been lots of hard work, but work I have loved doing. Every day is an adventure, every day brings new challenges. One of my photography lecturers at Bournemouth Uni once said “photography is about problem-solving” and I would have to agree. Whether it’s how can I paint 2 bits of wood to look like an American dinner as a background for a food shoot, to what settings will I need on my camera in busy kitchen capturing all the chef action of an evening service every day is different.

I am very glad that I have had an amazing first career as a retail buyer as this also helps with my photography business. it has taught me all about what story I tell in my photos, how commercial that needs to be and what types of customers those images are targeted to. It has helped me to think commercially about my clients and what they need, building relationships and developing a workflow enabling me to support their businesses. Whether this is with design and brand advice (yes all those years of developing brands for international companies have really paid off) or quick turnaround images as they need to get to press before products hit stores all of which is part of and parcel of running your own commercial business.
,
Most of all I’m proud of what I achieved, proud that my images help to build peoples brands, supporting their vision of their businesses. Proud to be a member of so many fabulous businesses across the UK, so a big big thank you for all your support over my first 7 years I have had a blast and am looking forward to many more.

Anyone out there who wants to change career and follow their dream, then in the words of the mighty Nike “just do it” life is too short, live the dream. x
